Join us for the PGR Research Picnic Day! A relaxed morning in the beautiful surroundings of the University of Leicester Botanic Garden. Share your research informally with fellow PhD students and researchers from across colleges, make new connections, and enjoy the sunshine. Light refreshments will be provided!

Venue: Beaumont Hall, Botanic Garden, Stoughton Drive South, Oadby, LE2 2NA (Google map link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/dUCro8RZtjgKYgGv9)

Transport: A FREE University shuttle bus runs from the main campus to Oadby Village, and there is a bus stop right in front of the Beaumont Hall. Film Screening: The Wandering of Three Siblings (SHAO Lo-Hui, 1962) with Introduction by gezaixi specialist Dr LIU Nan-Fang

The Wandering of Three Siblings smashed all Taiwanese box office records upon its release in late 1962. Its combination of Taiwanese-language gezaixi opera and martial arts offered both action and emotional excitement. Hanging on to traditional values of loyalty, chastity, righteousness, and familial obligation in turbulent times, as well as drawing on wuxia adventure and folk beliefs centred on worship of the goddess Mazu, the film resonated with audiences at a time when rapid social and cultural change associated with industrialisation and modernisation was transforming the island. Please join us in the afternoon of 11th June (Thursday) in Attenborough Film Theatre. This is a free event and everyone is welcomed to attend. Please reserve your place here.
