Continuing on from the great work of Elle, the 2020/21 Activities Officer, sustainability will be separated into a few different branches this year…
DIVESTMENT
Working with the University’s finance team, we’re looking to improve the transparency of their ethical investment policy as well as work to divest from even more. Previously the University committed to divesting from fossil fuels and now we’d like to hold them to account as well as look at who we accept money from – not just where it goes.
We’re helping them to develop an accessible booklet which tells students exactly where investments go, where they don’t invest and why investment should matter to students.
SUSTAINABILITY FRAMEWORK
Alongside the Social Impact team, we’re building a sustainability framework that – in the same way an EDI framework functions – will ensure decisions made at a University level take into account the UN sustainability and ESG goals.
WASTE AWARENESS
Led by students from Plan-It Change and other sustainability minded societies, we’ll be delivering an educational campaign to increase knowledge about proper waste disposal, from composting to good recycling practice.
If you’d like to get involved, then you can come let us know you’re interested by emailing su-president@leicester.ac.uk
We’re holding regular Green Bubble meetings (two a month) for students, and campaigners, to update each other on actions, campaigns and share ideas and thoughts. Our next big event will be for Go Green Week in February but, in the meantime, make sure you’re following the accounts below on social media to find out about their relevant, sustainable events.
