Jade Thomas

What are you studying?
I am a 3rd year Geology student
Where is your hometown?
London, England
What inspired you to become a part-time officer?
Over the last academic year, I worked very closely with the part-time officers, and I was inspired by how small suggestions in Network meetings became big ideas that had a positive impact on student experience. I then decided that I would like to have a more active role in improving student experience across campus, in particular the BAME student experience, as I can identify with some of the queries and concerns that may be raised.
What are your priorities for the year?
My main priority for this academic year is to make sure that BAME students feel that they are getting the most out of their university experience and are not simply turning up to get their degree. This means creating/widening the space for BAME students within the university community, ensuring that they feel that this is their ‘home away from home’.
What are your hobbies and interests?
In my spare time, I volunteer with the 63rd Leicestershire Cub Scouts, which involves running activities and taking the young people out camping. I also play Double Seconds, a type of Steel Pan, for Mangrove Steel Orchestra back home in London. Other than that, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, exploring new places, and trying new experiences
