About Us

Do you like to play tabletop games? Are you interested in seeing what all the fuss over Dungeons and Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, Warhammer, and all those other nerdy things is about?

If you answered 'yes' to either one of those questions, then the Tabletop Games Society is for you! If the answer is 'I don't know', or 'maybe', then come along anyway and give it a go!

No experience of any kind is necessary, and we make it a priority to welcome newcomers.

We play any and every tabletop game we can get our hands on, such as tabletop roleplaying games, trading and collectible card games, wargames and board games.

If we don’t have a game that you own/are interested in, then bring it along or suggest it to us! We buy new games in every semester on our community’s behest and recommendations.

As well as regular weekly and monthly meetings, we have a packed social calendar; on top of meeting twice a week on campus, we also run:

  • Extended monthly gaming sessions (‘Gaming Saturdays’)
  • On-and-off large socials, such as Bar Crawls and Laser Tag
  • Drafts for popular TCGs/CCGs
  • Tournaments, including Nationals with other Universities
  • Collaborations with other Student Societies
  • …and whatever else we can do!

Our meetings run in and out of term time, so make sure to check our Members-only Discord and Facebook page for more details (please see the 'Contact Information' section below). Want to get in touch with the committee? Feel free to reach out to us at the email address at the bottom of the page.

FAQs

When does Games Society meet?

We meet twice per week: Mondays  and Wednesdays from 6pm to 10pm. We also run a monthly Gaming Saturday from 10am-6pm as regularly as we can.

Please keep an eye on our Discord and our Facebook page for additional meetings and events!

What sort of games do you play?

We play all kinds of tabletop games, including (but not limited to) board games, card games, TTRPGs and wargames.

The games that have proven most popular recently include Warhammer (both 40k and Age of Sigmar), Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, Machi-Koro and Betrayal at the House on the Hill, though this is far from an exhaustive list. If there's a specific game you want to play it's definitely worth asking around the community - somebody will always be up for playing it!

If we don’t have a game you’re interested in, please don’t hesitate to recommend it to us! We’re always looking to our members to provide recommendations and we get in new board games each semester.

I am new to this. What do I do?

First and foremost, welcome to one of the best hobbies in the world!

Our meetings are completely casual. You can often simply walk in and find a group to play with. There are usually a number of groups and games running at a time, and our society is very welcoming to newcomers and eager to introduce new games to folks that are unfamiliar to them.

That having been said, the best time to arrive is 6pm as many games (especially TTRPGs) begin at the very start of our meetings.

If you’re completely lost, feel free to collar one of the committee. At the start of the academic year, we make it our biggest priority to welcome new members and get them playing something and meeting other people.

Do I need to bring anything to meetings?

You can if you want. Members often bring games along that they’re familiar with, and we’re always happy to see something new being played!

Otherwise, we have an ever-expanding inventory of over 100 games that members can access.

We will always bring some community-favourite games to meetings, but if you want to request something specific, check out our inventory (accessible to members only) and get in touch with us via Discord, Facebook, or email so we can take it out of storage for you.

I play wargames, but do not have any terrain. What do I do?

Thankfully, we have some terrain in storage that are suitable for wargames. If you’d like to borrow them for a meeting, please get in touch with us and we’ll take it out of storage for you.

I play card games. Do I need to bring my own?

In terms of decks, then you will, yes. Whilst we unfortunately don’t have any society decks, members will often introduce games to others by lending them a deck. If you’re seeking to grow a collection, the society has a LOT of Magic cards (seriously, they weigh a ton) and we run drafts of popular card games when we can.

I am in need of miniatures. Do you have any?

We do! The catch is that it’s just 40K at the moment. We have 1000 points each of Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines that are available for any society member to use upon request. We also have a few miniatures games in our storage such as Blood Bowl and Space Hulk.

Aside from this, you will unfortunately need to bring your own miniatures.

I want to find a TTRPG group. How can I do this?

Our members-only Discord group (Leicester Sabres) is a great place to find a group or set up games and campaigns for our biweekly sessions. Feel free to make a post mentioning that you want to join a game, or are interested in starting one!

Do you play Monopoly?

Ah, of course one would ask; the game to end all games. Breaker of Families, Ender of Friendships...

We do not speak that name here.

We don't have anything planned right now but check back soon!
