  • Action Tutoring logo

    Action Tutoring

Volunteering with Action Tutoring is a rewarding way to make a difference to the lives of young people living in your community. You will be directly supporting disadvantaged young people.

As an English or maths tutor, you will choose one of our partner schools and work with one or two pupils for an hour a week across the course of a school term. Sessions are either delivered on the school premises or online, at the same time each week. We provide all of our tutors with training and workbooks to use in sessions, and we will also process a DBS check for you.

Online tutoring is a great option for anyone on a busy schedule, less able to get to school locations or continuing to keep their distance from groups of people. Online tutoring also allows us to expand and recruit tutors from outside of our regions.

You need to be a fluent English speaker, and  have achieved an A or B at A-Level (or equivalent) in the subject, or similar subject, you are wishing to tutor. Enthusiasm for learning and the subject you’re tutoring is important. Experience working with young people is helpful but not essential. Good communication skills, patient, committed and resilient. We do review all qualifications and experience however and would encourage you to apply - even if you don't meet the exact criteria.

Through tutoring with us our volunteers are able to develop a wealth of transferable skills whilst making a significant difference.

If you join an in school programme, we will reimburse you for your travel up to £5 per session.

  • After18 logo

    After18

After18 is a charity specialised in supporting unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and young refugees under 25 to adjust to living in the UK, rebuild their lives and prepare for their future.

After18 was founded in 2013 in response to the rising number of unaccompanied children in Leicester who were asking for support when they turned 18. Children and young people fleeing war and persecution in their home country travel alone to the UK to seek safety. They arrive bewildered, traumatised and anxious, living alone in an unfamiliar place where they may not speak the language or understand the culture. We reach out and assist them with accessing mainstream services, at the same time as listening to their needs and working with them to develop our services.

After18 runs an education project, offering language classes, homework support and access to educational opportunities, from when a young person first arrives until they are considering applying for university or entering the workforce. We also provide a wide range of activities for young people to socialise, have fun and learn new skills.

We now have over 200 young people using our services each year.

Doorstep Library is a community-focused charity dedicated to bringing the magic of books and the joy of reading directly into the homes of children across London and beyond who need our support.

We use books to fuel children’s natural love of stories, fire their imaginations, and encourage their appreciation of reading. Our projects not only improve literacy and confidence in children, but also increase family wellbeing and bonding through the joy of sharing stories. This kind of tailored support and unique home-based approach enables us to help prepare children for school and broaden their opportunities in life.

    Where and When:

We have volunteer opportunities for Lambeth in Brixton and Tulse Hill. We also run projects in Hammersmith & Fulham, Camden, Westminster and are expanding this year in Kensington & Chelsea, with a new project in Latimer Road!

You can volunteer on either a Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday during school term time starting at 4.30pm and finishing at 7.00pm or starting at 3:45pm and finishing at 6:30pm depending on the project.

Volunteers only visit during school term times so there are plenty of breaks throughout the year. Volunteers are also entitled to 2 absences per term. Overall volunteers just volunteer for approximately 31 weeks of the year!

    ROLE:

Reading Volunteers visit the same families at home, online, or on their doorstep, every week with backpacks full of books and two little stools to share their love of reading with the children they visit.

Our volunteers don’t just read stories though; they do silly voices, handpick the books, and give special recommendations for each child. And, at the end of the session, they leave behind a selection of books for the children to borrow for the week.

Through our long-term approach, our volunteers build trusting relationships with families, helping to connect them with the community and signposting to additional sources of local support. Whether in person, or online, we are there to support children and families who need us most.

You volunteer with the same volunteer partner each week and read with five families for 20 minutes each. We visit families either inside their homes or on the doorstep, depending on family preference.

You will be responsible for arriving at the project base on time, choosing books and preparing for the sessions with your regular volunteer partner. You will be visiting families who live nearby at the agreed time and complete post-visit records after your visits back at the project base.

You will be fully trained in all aspects of becoming a Reading Volunteer so that you feel confident before starting sessions with families. You will receive regular contact with Doorstep Library staff members so that you are fully supported throughout your volunteer journey, especially during your trial period. You can receive additional training opportunities to develop your skills. We celebrate and recognise your time volunteering with us.

We are a not-for-profit event company who organise a wide range of marathons, half marathons, 10Ks and more across the UK. Whatever your ability, there's a place for you with Run For All!

Run For All is part of the lasting legacy of the late amateur athlete and fundraiser Jane Tomlinson CBE. Jane, from Leeds, made headlines around the world by taking part in a series of incredible endurance events – despite being diagnosed with an incurable cancer.

By 2007 her declining health meant she was unable to take part in any more extraordinary undertakings. However, using the money she raised on her epic Ride Across America, Jane was able to sow the seeds for the Run For All Leeds 10K – the cornerstone of what would become her continuing legacy.

Today that one run has grown into one of the UK’s biggest not-for-profit events companies, providing a fundraising vehicle for a huge number of local and national charities.

Providing accessible events regardless of ability, demographic, age or background, Run For All now hosts successful mass participation events across Yorkshire, Lancashire, Lincoln, Norfolk the Midlands and Middlesbrough.

Every year tens of thousands of people take part in our popular events – running for charity, for a personal challenge or just for fun.

While we’ve changed since that first Leeds 10K – not least by growing significantly, Run For All’s philosophy remains exactly the same; high-quality, great fun events for absolutely all abilities.

    Operation Wallacea

Operation Wallacea is a network of academics from European and North American universities, who design and implement biodiversity and conservation management research expeditions.

Research is supported by participants who join the programme, to strengthen their CV/Resume, gain skills they wish to gain or expand upon. They could also join to collect data for a dissertation or thesis (also known as an Independent Research Project (IRP). Academics benefit from funding for high quality fieldwork enabling them to publish papers in peer reviewed journals. This model enables the collection of large temporal and spatial datasets used for assessing the effectiveness of conservation management interventions.

We began working within the Wallacea region of Indonesia in 1995. Initially funded to run a rapid assessment of this poorly-explored area, we soon discovered that the need for long term monitoring data in many ecosystems was critical. Nearly 30 years on, we now run biodiversity research expeditions all over the world, sourcing data that has underpinned hundreds of research papers and informed high-level environmental policy decisions in the sites we work in.

  • Shama Women's Centre logo

    Shama Women's Centre

We aim to empower women to become more active, economically, educationally and socially, through a range of activities to develop their confidence, employability skills, health and wellbeing.

Shama Women’s Centre came into existence 38 years ago, when a group of local BAME women got together to provide culturally inclusive support and activities to local women. The project grew rapidly, and the unincorporated organisation received support from the Leicester City Council to provide an array of services to the increasingly diverse local community.

The support from Shama Women’s Centre included empowerment, camaraderie, peer support, training and upskilling, as well as information, advice and guidance.

In August 2000, the organisation successfully registered as an incorporated charity (Reg no.1087995). For the next several years, Shama Women’s Centre continued to work alongside the local voluntary sector as a niche provider of culturally conducive support services, gaining high recognition through various accreditations. We have been recognised nationally being ‘highly commended’ by Lloyds Bank Foundation for valuing our volunteers.

Through social, educational and emotional support we have helped thousands of women to gain confidence, qualifications and into work. With our help, local BAME women, who might otherwise experience isolation due to cultural barriers, have become active and valued members of the community. We are extremely proud of the work we do and the women who have achieved so much with our assistance. Many have become volunteers and ambassadors for the Centre wanting ‘to give back to the community’.

We are the only women’s centre in the heart of Leicester, that provides a culturally conducive environment with multi-lingual staff and volunteers delivering a range of accreditations such as IT, ESOL, Mental Health Awareness, accredited level 2 business courses and more. We have a purpose built industrial textiles training centre, helping hundreds of women train and gain employment or start their own business. Our Information Advice and Guidance services support women to search, apply and prepare for jobs and gain employment including setting up their own businesses. In addition, we offer women opportunities to support each other through peer groups. Our on-site childcare means women with pre-school children can access support without spending a fortune on childcare. Our mental health and domestic abuse counselling services help break down cultural barriers and enable women to achieve independence and success.

We work with the media to help reinforce a positive view of veganism and to help a larger audience see that veganism is a rewarding, enjoyable and viable lifestyle.

We’re driven by a distinct purpose to reduce textile waste, and encourage our customers to make kinder choices when it comes to purchasing and repurposing clothing. Our circular fashion model means we disregard the corporate ‘take-make-dispose’ pattern and ensure fashion garments are worn for as long as they can be and then transformed through upcycling and recycling after that.

100% of the profit generated by White Rose supports the Aegis Trust, a not-for-profit charity, which works to build peace in communities at risk of genocide and mass atrocities and rebuild communities which have suffered from it in their road to healing and recovery.

We value people, our planet and clothing, in a manner reflective of the organisational values.
