Matt Schofield

I became an officer due to a lack of change for students. For too long, students have not been prioritised by the University. As your representative, I will be the student voice in senior University meetings, ensuring that student views are presented and acted upon for positive change, that leads to a better experience for students. A key project I'd like to work on is improving student safety on campus. I'd like to get to a point where all students feel safe on campus, no matter where they are or the time of day.

My priorities

Increase student job opportunities on and around campus by prioritising roles that can be filled by students.

Align jobs with academic courses e.g, media degrees to help with marketing - providing paid, relevant experience.

This supports employability, strengthens campus community, and encourages both attendance and engagement, as students are more likely to stay and participate when their peers who are working nearby and in turn,

If students are already on campus for work, they are more likely to attend their lectures and classes.

Many students don't feel safe on campus

A safer environment encourages greater student engagement.

Potential improvements include better lighting, more security presence, and increased CCTV coverage.

Joint campaign collaboration with Cleo (communities Officer) to raise awareness of key safety contacts (like campus security).

Represent students on key board and committtees.

Prepare thoroughtly be reading papers and asking at least 3 student-focused questions each time.

Ensure student interests are central to all decisions

Using the knowledge bank we are proposing to create, data will be utilised to support student perspectives.

Share important updates in our weekly exec meetings, especially if decisions could impact students.

Student support services are overwhelmed, with wait times of up to a month for Concered.

The gap between disclosure and action is too big.

Propose involving our medically trained student nurses to support mental health services.

Success of physio students working in the Jo Williams clinic has proven this could be immenselt valuable by giving real-time professional experience.

This could be a year-long polot project, gradually introducing student nurses into the system.
