So, you've been accepted into Leicester! Congratulations! We can't wait to meet you. But in the meantime, you will be spending your Summer prepping for what's to come, which might leave you asking... What exactly is Freshers?

Freshers is a welcome period at UK Universities for students both new and returning. It is a chance to get to know the area you're going to be studying in, the campus, and your coursemates. Its the perfect way to blow off a bit of steam before the grind starts! Here's a quick breakdown of what the Students' Union has in store for you... More things will be added as we get closer to Freshers week, so keep an eye on our socials (@leicesterunion) or What's On page!

We at Leicester Students’ Union work very hard to make our Freshers programme as welcoming and inclusive as possible.

Whether you’re moving to Leicester for the first time, a commuter, a postgrad, a mature student, an international student, a distance learner, a student-parent or someone who just isn't sure where to start - this is your week!

With that said, if you consider yourself to have a disability, long term health condition or chronic illness and require support accessing our events, let one of our staff at our pop-up reception know when you get here.

Please also consider the following to make your Freshers experience as smooth as possible:

Get a Sunflower lanyard

The Sunflower lanyard/ hidden disabilities sunflower is a visible sign that the wearer may have a non-visible disability, condition or chronic illness. Wearing a sunflower lanyard allows the wearer to signal that they may need a little help, understanding or time. You can get yours online or for free in-person at the Highcross Shopping Centre.

Get a Nimbus/Access card

Nimbus or access cards translates disability or impairments into easy-to-understand symbols on a handy card which can be used to convey access requirements by the card holder. You can order one here.

Talk to us

During Freshers Week we will have a pop-up reception at the entrance of the Percy Gee building. Come and see us (ideally with your Sunflower lanyard or Nimbus/Access cards) if you have any needs and our colleagues will be more than happy to help.
