WELCOME TO THE WOMEN IN LAW SOCIETY!
A warm welcome to the Women in Law Society: a supportive and empowering community for women with an interest in law. Whether you are a law student hoping to build meaningful connections, develop professionally, or explore issues surrounding gender and the legal profession, our society aims to provide a space where you can grow with confidence.
We are committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment where women feel comfortable building friendships, developing professional skills, and preparing for future careers in law. We understand that larger or mixed-gender spaces can sometimes feel intimidating or inaccessible for cultural, religious, or personal reasons, which is why we strive to create opportunities where members feel supported and encouraged.
As a member of the Women in Law Society, you will have access to a range of opportunities designed to support both your personal and professional development.
Social Events & Community Building
Law school can be demanding, and we believe having a strong support system makes all the difference. Throughout the year, we host a variety of social and wellbeing-focused events that allow members to connect in a relaxed and welcoming environment. From Galentine’s brunches and movie nights to International Women’s Day celebrations and other socials, our events are designed to help members build friendships, feel part of a community, and enjoy university life alongside their studies.
Career Development & Skill-Building Workshops
We host workshops aimed at helping women feel more confident navigating the legal profession and recruitment process. Topics may include commercial awareness, networking skills, assessment centre preparation, and guidance on applications for vacation schemes, training contracts, mini-pupillages, and pupillages.
We recognise that aspects of professional development (particularly networking) can feel daunting, so our events are designed to be approachable, supportive, and tailored to the experiences of women entering the legal field.
Competitions with Purpose
Our society offers internal competitions designed to help members strengthen their legal and communication skills in a supportive setting. These may include mooting, debating, speech, and essay competitions centred around themes such as women’s rights, diversity, and wider social issues relevant to law.
These opportunities are intended to help members develop confidence in advocacy, public speaking, and legal reasoning while providing a more encouraging environment to practise and improve skills. For many students, they can also act as a stepping stone towards more formal mooting or debating experiences and can contribute positively to CV development.
To support members taking part, we aim to provide guidance through workshops and example materials to help participants feel prepared and confident.
Networking & Mentorship
Building professional connections can feel overwhelming, particularly in a profession where women have historically faced barriers to progression. The Women in Law Society aims to create opportunities for members to connect with legal professionals and gain insight into different career paths within the legal sector.
Through collaborations, guest speakers, panel events, and society initiatives, members can learn from women working across the profession and hear first-hand experiences about navigating legal careers.
We also run our Future Female Figures Mentoring Scheme, connecting members with experienced solicitors and barristers who can offer insight, encouragement, and personalised guidance to support members as they explore their career goals.
Practical Support: Formal Workwear Bursary Scheme
We recognise that pursuing a legal career can come with financial pressures. To help reduce barriers, our Formal Workwear Bursary Scheme provides support towards professional clothing for interviews, assessment centres, and formal networking opportunities, helping members feel prepared and confident when pursuing career opportunities.
Why Join the Women in Law Society?
At the heart of our society is a commitment to supporting and uplifting women pursuing legal careers. We aim to help bridge the gap between ambition and opportunity by creating a space where members can build confidence, expand their networks, and develop valuable skills for the future.
Through workshops, competitions, mentoring, networking, and social events, members can gain practical experience, professional insight, and a strong sense of community — all while being supported by like-minded women navigating similar journeys.
