Welcome to UOL Humanitarian Society!

We are a multi-award winning society formed to tackle and raise awareness for humanitarian causes, whether it is within the Leicester community, across the UK, or beyond.

Who is this society for?

Anyone who cares about humanity🌍

The Humanitarian Society focuses on human rights abuses around the world, creating opportunities for students to learn, raise awareness, and take action.

We run awareness events and pop-ups on campus, organise fundraisers, collaborate with guest speakers, and share information about local protests and volunteering opportunities. Our aim is to make human rights issues more visible and give students meaningful ways to get involved.

Most of our events are free to attend. Membership is also free, but the only reason you need to purchase membership is if you want to nominate yourself for a committee position.

Topics we have discussed:

  • Homelessness Crisis
  • Mental Health Awareness
  • Caste System in India
  • Period Poverty and Gender-Based Violence
  • Neocolonialism in the DRC
  • Palestinian Genocide
  • Demilitarise UOL Campaign
  • Asylum Seekers
  • Leicester UCU Strikes

We have fundraised for:

  • Freedom4Girls
  • Medical Aid for Palestine
  • Blood Cancer UK
  • Conversations over Borders
  • Help the Homeless Leicester
  • YMCA
  • Migrant Help
  • International Rescue Committee
  • Yafa Foundation
  • Leicester University and College Union
  • Congo Children Trust
  • SolidariTee
  • Palestinian Children's Relief Fund

We aim to tackle more every year with the contribution of our committee and members!

Newsletter:

Our newsletter is self-published and has won awards from SPA Journalism. It tackles a diverse range of humanitarian issues and political topics, contains information about upcoming events, and exclusive interviews with guest speakers. If you are a writer with an interest in writing about social injustice, political events, activism, etc. then you have previously been offered the opportunity to write for our newsletter and get your work published.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Unfortunately, our newsletter has not been active for some time. However, we’re hoping to bring it back and fill the Newsletter Officer role during the Autumn Bi-Election, so keep an eye out for updates. In the meantime, find the links below to check out our previous issues!
