Distance Learners’ Day
Aims –
To build an on-campus day for distance learning students and enable them to be welcomed to campus to meet academic and support staff, and their peers.
Progress –
An initial trial was held in April 2025 with The School of Archaeology and Ancient History and saw 25 students visit campus. The event saw tours and talks from departments across the university and Students’ Union.
Using the success of the trial as a selling method, the event was taken to the University of Leicester Events Team to ask for collaboration. After discussion, the project was taken on, and the 2026 event was set in motion.
Planning took place from July 2025 to March 2026 and registration was open to all 6 schools from the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities.
The event took place on Friday 27th March 2026 and had 40+ students in attendance from three different schools. Staff from all three schools were in attendance, along with staff from support services and the Students’ Union.
In the time since an article about the event have been published internally by the University of Leicester and promoted on both Instagram and LinkedIn. There is a view to publish a public facing article about it when workloads allow and have it included in the end of year-round ups by the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Education and the Vice Chancellor.
The 2027 event has already been approved and will hopefully see all distance learning students from across Leicester invited, including PGRs. Planning for this should begin in the summer.
