Sleeping Pods (Expired)

Idea Description:

Having sleeping pods on campus. So one can rest a bit for 30 min stretches if so they wish. Obviously, it would have to be monitored so if somebody is spending a lot of time on them they will be referred to wellbeing department. Or comfortable silent areas.

Make the University of Leicester campus a smoke and vape free environment (Expired)

Idea Description:

Establishing a smoke and vape-free environment at the University of Leicester would significantly enhance the collective wellbeing of the campus community by eliminating exposure to second-hand smoke and aerosol emissions. By removing these health hazards from communal spaces, the university creates a more inclusive environment for individuals with respiratory sensitivities and aligns its physical surroundings with its world-class medical and health research. This shift doesn't just protect physical health; it also fosters a culture of wellness that supports students and staff in maintaining healthy lifestyles, effectively reducing the social triggers that can hinder those attempting to quit.

Beyond health benefits, a smoke-free policy offers substantial operational and environmental advantages, reinforcing the university’s commitment to sustainability. The elimination of cigarette butt litter—one of the most persistent forms of non-biodegradable waste—reduces maintenance costs and prevents toxic chemicals from entering the local ecosystem. Furthermore, transitioning to a clean-air campus enhances the institution's reputation as a forward-thinking leader in higher education. By creating a cleaner, safer, and more professional atmosphere, the university provides an aesthetic and functional environment that meets the high expectations of modern global talent and prospective students.

Install more wall-mounted cigarette bins to reduce caompus litter (Expired)

Idea Description:

Currently, our campus has a lot of cigarette butt litter. While the university shouldn't actively promote smoking, the reality is that people who smoke will continue to do so. Without enough accessible, wall-mounted disposal units in high-traffic outdoor areas, these filters, which are essentially single-use plastics, are constantly thrown on the floor, creating both an eyesore and an environmental hazard.

Installing more dedicated cigarette bins provides the necessary infrastructure to manage this waste responsibly. This simple step will drastically reduce visible litter, prevent toxic micro-plastics and save the estates team time currently spent sweeping up tiny filters. Providing the right bins doesn't encourage the habit, it simply protects our local environment and keeps the campus clean.

Fix bathrooms and taps in DWL & bring back bins (Expired)

Idea Description:

Non functioning taps should be a thing of the past but some don't operate (maybe the sensor can't detect our hands)

Ever since they got rid of paper towels in those bathrooms, I see a lot of toilet paper being used and carelessly littered since there's no bins

Get rid of the piano's in the SU (Expired)

Idea Description:

With the pianos being in the SU square, they are obnoxiously loud to the point where you can't hear someone across from you speak. Whilst the SU square is a social space and is not meant to be quiet, the piano echoes around the building and makes it an overwhelming environment. It is not fair on others to hear someone playing a repetitive tune for ages. Is there a way of moving the piano to somewhere else where it wouldn't cause as much disturbance?

Provide students with an option for quiet accommodation (Expired)

Idea Description:

Many other universities offer their students quiet/ no alcohol in Uni owned accommodation which is good for people who are neurodivergent or do not like to live in loud environments. This university should do something similar as it will give students who may not like the loudness of Uni halls to have an option to stay in halls during their time at university.

Open outdoor volleyball and basketball courts (Expired)

Idea Description:

Currently, there aren’t any open public spaces on campus for students to casually play sports. Campus should be a place where students want to hang out, socialize, and build connections. Installing outdoor volleyball and basketball courts on the green space next to the Danielle Brown Sports Centre would encourage a stronger community feel, giving students a fun and accessible way to meet new people while also staying active. The courts could be free and open to all students, with the option for students to bring their own ball or for gym members to borrow one. This would promote inclusivity, encourage fitness, and create a welcoming environment where students can both relax and engage in healthy activity.

Adding pickleball as an option to play in the sports centres (Expired)

Idea Description:

At present, the sports centers offers the option to play badminton, netball, volleyball, and futsal. Pickleball is a fun and fast-growing sport that is accessible and beginner-friendly. Adding it as an option would broaden the variety of activities available and give students a chance to try something new.

Partner with driving schools for discounts (Expired)

Idea Description:

Driving schools often charge upwards of £50 per 1.5 hour lesson! Even if a student only takes 1 lesson a week - say because they don't have a car - that will cost them £200+ per month! Unless people live/work in a city after graduation, they're going to need to know how to drive. Ride shares and taxi's are harder to get in more rural areas. Therefore, the SU should partner with driving schools to get students discounts. A university this size could drive a lot of money their way - even at discounted rates. (No pun intended). It would be a win/win scenario.

Train all incoming students on GDPR rules (Expired)

Idea Description:

Over the past decade more people are taking pictures of more people and posting them on social media - including WhatsApp (which is considered to be social media, legally). If the subject does not know they are having their picture taken, and does not consent to it being shared, then this is breaking GDPR. It is unreasonable to think people won't take pictures; but students should at least be aware of the laws and the possible consequences of breaking them.

SU publicly supports striking staff and UCU (????)

Idea Description:

The SU has yet to make any real commitment regarding support of UCU and striking staff, despite acknowledging via email to all students on 30/10/25 that "students have strong feelings on the strategic review and believe that the University should look at alternative solutions to address the challenges. They have asked that the SU opposes the review, course closures and staff redundancies and supports the strike action taken by UCU."

Many students remain poorly informed about the reasons for the strikes and impact of the Strategic Review upon staff and students. Information is repeatedly presented in a way that is not relevant to young people or transparent. There has yet to be a student Referendum and one does not appear to be planned.

Information supplied by the SU regarding the students' ability to demonstrate support for the strikes was considered misleading by many students.

Students motion that the SU informs all students accurately regarding the reasons for strike action and impacts of the Strategic Review on staff and students. Students motion that the SU then conducts a Referendum on the subject. Pending the outcome of the Referendum, students motion that the SU publicly support striking staff and UCU. Should the Referendum confirm a majority vote that students support striking staff and UCU, the SU must publicly and unreservedly support striking staff and UCU.

Increasing bus services during peak times (Expired)

Idea Description:

Many students are facing difficulties with the current bus service. By the time the buses reach the university stops, they are often full, forcing us to wait for the next one. This significantly increases our travel time. Additionally, the bus tracking app sometimes indicates that a bus is approaching. However, when it arrives at the last stop in Oadby, it drops off passengers and then switches to "out of service" and frequently causes us to arrive late. As a result, we have to wait even longer, with no clear information about when the next available bus will arrive.

It would be beneficial to increase bus services, especially during peak times when most students need to arrive at university for their lectures.

Provide catered food in Oadby (Expired)

Idea Description:

Providing a catered option for food provision in Oadby accomodation. There are four commercial kitchens in Oadby that have been shut down and replaced by commercial outlets on campus. Providing meals in Oadby would build a stronger sense of community than the current residential life events calendar that exists. Providing a meal that is shared helps build a sense of community similar to the goals of the current reslive calendar. The current reslive calendar shows that the sharing of food can build a sense of community with events like a pizza and breakfast event however these are random and unpredictable.

Providing a catered option similar to what used to exist on the Oadby campus would be preferred.

Student workers in campus stores (Expired)

Idea Description:

I used to work at the delicious campus store as a part time student worker. I have been informed by my manager that student workers are no longer employed in campus stores and prefer to hire full time workers instead. The on campus stores are a partnership between the union and the university. As such the union should fight to have its own students working on campus stores where possible.

It is absurd to have on campus stores withut students working in them! Bring back student workers to on campus stores!

First aid training for all captains and coaches for sports teams (Expired)

Idea Description:

Currently the University offers us no first aid training for anyone in sports. Having proposed the idea to Team Leicester originally, they replied with 'we will struggle to fund this', therefore they shut the idea down straight away. Funding should never come before student welfare. Not now, not ever. So if we can get this through Leicester 100 to make this policy (as it is in many other universities including De Montfort) it will really help to start protecting our players and our teammates as they are the ones who suffer due to our University not providing us with the basic training of First Aid.

The University has a duty of care for its students legally but also ethically. In Sports injuries occur often both big and small, and in some cases hospitalisation is needed. With the long waiting times for Ambulances, first aid training is needed. It can help change the outcome of injuries significantly by knowing exactly what to do. If it is not provided, players are left not knowing what to do.

I urge the Leicester 100 students to pass this to make it policy and ensure no team is left unprepared in a medical emergency. It is time to put student welfare first.

Removal of residential advisors from university accommodation (Expired)

Idea Description:

Residential Advisors (RAs) are current students who work as part of the Residence Life Team, intended to help students settle into university accommodation. However, some students may feel uncomfortable with the presence of RAs, or they may not find the services provided by RAs useful. Furthermore, the cost of employing RAs may be an unnecessary expense, which could be used in other areas of student support. This policy proposes that RA’s should be removed from accommodations. This change aims to give students more autonomy over their living spaces and ensure that resources are allocated effectively.

Facts:

The university employs a number of RAs across its accommodation sites, and the cost of employing them is a significant expense.

There are other ways students can get support, such as through the residential front desk and student support services.

On Glassdoor RA raise issues about the tasks they are given and that some tasks feel like they are bugging the residents rather than helping them.

https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Employee-Review-University-of-Leicester-E35685-RVW41476260.htm

The university own tiktok promotional content also shows that residents find visits annoying.

https://www.tiktok.com/@uolreslife/video/7436505832994409761

Opinions:

I believe that students should have the option of not having RAs in their accommodations, and that the university should respect students’ preferences and independence.

I believe that the money allocated to RAs could be better spent on other resources, such as cheaper accommodation.

I believe that removing RAs would lead to a more comfortable living environment for students.

Allow legal representation in student conduct complaints (Expired)

Idea Description:

Senate segulation 11.69 needs to be changed to allow legal represenation. Student conduct complaints are high stakes which can involve serious allegations and tough penalties being applied. Extending the gym hours to 12 on weekdays (Expired)

Idea Description:

Keeping it open for 2 more hours should be manageable and it would be a little easier for the staff to handle. This two hour window would help people that have classes till 7, have to handle club activities, events, cook for themselves and cool down a little before hitting the gym.

Since 6.30 am would be a little difficult for students that have 9-9.30 am classes. I hope this would be an amicable solution

Create a convenience store in the village (Expired)

Idea Description:

As the village is a place to a large home for students, the uni should have a small convenience store so that students are able to buy emergency supplies instead of going to the asda. this will benefit the students as it will enable them to obtain stuff from a local store like a corner store which is more convenient and this could potentially benefit the uni as it would increase the ways in which they can obtain more money from students.

Extend university gym hours to 24/7 (Expired)

Idea Description:

Currently, university gym facilities close at 10 PM on weekdays and 7:30 on weekends, which does not adequately accommodate the diverse and demanding schedules of our student body. Many students are balancing academic commitments, part-time jobs, and extracurricular activities, leaving limited time to prioritize physical health and well-being within restricted gym hours.

Extending gym operations to 24/7 would provide all students—regardless of their schedules—with the opportunity to exercise at their convenience, promoting healthier lifestyles and improving mental well-being. Physical fitness is proven to reduce stress, enhance focus, and support overall academic success. Making gym facilities available around the clock would better align with the needs of our campus community and foster an environment that prioritizes wellness.

We urge the university to recognize the importance of flexible fitness access and support this initiative. Join us in advocating for a healthier, more accommodating campus.

Idea Description:

As far as i am aware, there are 2 accessible toilets in Maurice Shock. one on the ground floor, the other on the 1st floor. that means the second and third are without. for people with accessibility needs, they would have to use an elevator to get to these floors which takes quite considerable time and an accessible toilet on the second and third floor would fix this and prevent students from missing more teaching time.

Reduce light pollution from the university’s buildings (Expired)

Idea Description:

Review the lighting on the University’s buildings and make the following changes to lighting following the five principles for responsible outdoor lighting to reduce the University’s light pollution footprint:

1. Useful

All light should have a clear purpose

Before installing or replacing a light, determine whether light is needed. Consider how the use of light will impact the area, including wildlife and the environment. Consider using reflective paints or self-luminous markers for signs, curbs, and steps to reduce the need for permanently installed outdoor lighting.

2. Targeted

Light should be directed only to where it’s needed

Use shielding and careful aiming to target the direction of the light beam so that it points downward and does not spill beyond where it is needed.

3. Low level

Illumination should be no higher than necessary

Use the lowest light level required. Be mindful of surface conditions, as some surfaces may reflect more light into the night sky than was intended.

4. Controlled

Light should be used only when it is useful

Use controls such as timers or motion detectors to ensure that light is available when it is needed, dimmed when possible, and turned off when not needed.

5. Warm-coloured

Use warmer-colour lights where possible

Limit the amount of shorter wavelength (blue-violet) light to the least amount needed. Light where you need it, when you need it, in the amount needed, and no more.

https://darksky.org/resources/guides-and-how-tos/lighting-principles/

Making these changes will result in the following benefits, helping the University make progress towards the sustainable development goals:

•Reduced energy usage due to better designed lighting

•Increased safety on campus due to reduced glare from lighting and reduced contrast between lit and unlit areas.

•More nature on campus as artificial lighting has negative impacts on wildlife and human health.

•Improved observing conditions for astronomy, especially for students using the Oadby Observatory.

More plant based food on campus (Rejected)

Idea Description:

Campaign Outline

To encourage the University of Leicester to adopt more plant based food options. Recommending a minimum of 75% wholly plant-based options in all catering outlets whilst ensuring that students who need meat for cultural, dietary, textural, and any other reasons are not disadvantaged. With the view of increasing the amount of plant-based food that the university offers by around 5% each year as well as encouraging 100% plant-based options at university events where food and drink are provided. Transitioning to plant-based catering will have a number of benefits; individually, socially, environmentally and sustainably.

Reasons for Transitioning to Plant-Based Catering

Plant-based foods on average release up to 84% less greenhouse gas emissions (CO2eq), use up to 18 times less land, and ~69% less water than the equivalent meat-based foods, making plant-based foods far more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Plant-based foods were found to be up to ~30% cheaper on average than meat options, a study found from The University of Oxford, this saving will be negotiated to be passed on to students/staff. Plant-Based foods are the most accessible food options available for virtually all, including dietary and religious observances.

Plant-based foods have been found to be associated with lower risks of health issues such as coronary heart disease, diabetes (type 2), obesity, various cancers (incl. bowel cancer, stroke, and can result in lower blood pressure and cholesterol).

Transitioning to Plant-Based Foods for the Animals Also

Every year ~80 billion land animals are slaughtered, up to 2.8 trillion when you include marine life, with a 1/5th (53 million tonnes) being wasted and ending up in the bin.

The Plant-Based Campaign Supported by Plant-Based Universities

Plant Based Universities is a student lead international campaign that started in 2021 and has successfully transitioned 12 universities* to 75-100% plant-based options, with over 80 campaigns currently active.

Plant-based foods are the most accessible food options available, being suitable for virtually all dietary requirements, religious observances (e.g. Halal and Kosher), and can be maximally accessible if majority vegan plant-based.

Summary

Universities not only educate future academics, they are at the forefront of much of the climate and environmental research, as a such have a responsibility to act on the research and data. More than 650 academics have signed an open letter calling for UK universities to transition to and adopt plant-based catering across universities campuses to act as leaders in tackling climate breakdown, environmental and ecological destruction, and to achieve sustainability goals. At the University of Leicester, students, staff, and academics have the opportunity to make a significant positive difference and reduce our global impact, simply by transitioning over to plant-based foods.

* Universities that have transitioned so far since 2021 are: Bristol, Cambridge, UCL, Warwick, Stirling, London Metropolitan, Kent, Lancaster, Newcastle, Falmouth, Queen Mary, and Graz (in Hungary).

Together, we can all make a significant and positive difference to the environment, ecosystem, and climate by simply going plant-based

Healthy restaurants on campus (Expired)

Idea Description:

The university's eating outlets mostly sell junk food like pizza, boba teas and fries. It would be better if they opened a restaurant which sold healthy food like eggs (scrambled or poached or boiled), salad bowls. Fruit smoothies instead of boba tea, and coffee drinks at affordable prices rather than these expensive outlets. Some more ideas of healthy food options are simple vegetable rice, curries, toast or sandwiches. I think it is important for students to consume healthy food, which are affordable at the same time. We could also make this student led and the profit could be given to the student itself, otherwise we could ask students to volunteer. If funds are needed for this, a fundraising should be conducted and university support will be extremely helpful.

Group walks for commuters (Expired)

Idea Description:

As the days grows shorter and darker, I've found myself, like many others, often making late journerys to the train station. This means that as a female commuter, this is quite intimidating and is one of the main reason I hesitate to attend my late lectures. However, alternatives do exist, such as the bus or an uber but those costs evidently add up, especially alongside the price of a train ticket.

Although, the 20-minute walk to the train station may seem brief, I would like to suggest implementing group walks. This is not only a safer option but can harbour an envrionment for creating new meaningful friendships.

Palestine solidarity coalition demands of UoL and LSU (Expired)

Idea Description:

As students we call on you as our University and our Students’ Union to make these changes. We also demand as our Students’ Union that you help us to pressure the University into acting on these demands.

Section 1: Public Statement

1a) The University of Leicester updates its statement making it clear that the state of Israel must be condemned for the mass killing of civilian Palestinians. Failing this the University should at least alter the statement to list the numbers of casualties and in particular child casualties on both sides.

1b) The University of Leicester and the UoL students’ union makes a public apology acknowledging that the way they handled Russia’s invasion of Ukraine vs how they have handled the genocide of the Palestinian people; was unequal in support and gave the impression to students that they believe that white people’s lives matter more than the lives of Arabs.

1c) The University publicly recognises that all of the 12 higher education facilities in Gaza have been systematically and intentionally destroyed or damaged, in what has been dubbed 'scholasticide' [1]. 95 academic staff have been killed, 88,000 students have been deprived of education and 555 were not granted international scholarships. [2]

1d) The University updates its public statement to include information on the provisional ICJ ruling on genocide noting that all states party to the genocide convention, including the UK, have a duty to implement the orders of the ICJ and prevent genocide.

1e) Upon the University failing to act on our requests, the Students' Union put out their own statement that actually reflects the views of students

Section 2: Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions

2a) The University does everything within its legal power to divest from brands that are profiting from, financially supporting or publicly supporting the Israeli apartheid and genocide. And where it is not possible to do so the University provide reasons for why they cannot take such measures

2b) The University does not allow companies and brands to advertise themselves on campus that are actively aiding the ongoing genocide and apartheid of Palestinians. In particular but not limited to companies that are producing weaponry being used to kill Palestinians e.g. BAE systems, MBDA, Leonardo to name just some.

2c) Where possible the University removes all brands from campus that are publicly or financially supporting the genocide and apartheid of Palestinians by the state of Israel in particular but not limited to: HP, CocaCola and all of its subsidiaries (SmartWater etc), Pepsi, Starbucks.

2d) The University implements a full academic boycott of Israeli Universities which have shown to be willing and persistent accomplaces in Israel's apartheid and genocidal regime. [3]

Section 3: Malcolm Shaw

3a) The University publicly acknowledges and reprimands Emeritus professor Malcolm Shaw as being in breach of the University’s dignity and respect policy for Islamophobia. Failing this, the University publicly acknowledges that its dignity and respect policy is entirely performative and in reality they do not care if staff members are in breach of it. [4]

3b) The University and the UoL Students’ Union acknowledges that Malcolm Shaw's views do not reflect the views of students or other staff.

Section 4: Supporting Palestinians

4a) The University of Leicester explores collaborative projects with Palestinian educational institutions including scholarships, academic fellowships and twinning arrangements with Universities in the occupied territories.

4b) The University encourages staff and students to educate themselves on both the history and current state of the relationship between Israel and Palestine and the UK’s influence in this.

4c) The University looks to donate and encourages its staff to donate to charities seeking to provide necessary aid to those suffering genocide in the Gaza strip.

Letter-writing campaign to push back EVisa deadline (Expired)

Idea Description:

The UK government is implementing a new E-Visa system by the end of this year (2024), at which time the Biometric Residency Permit (BRP) cards for all visa-holders in the UK will expire. This includes international students, university staff, and faculty, as well as over 4 million other non-EU immigrants across the United Kingdom. A pilot program to test the process ran from May 2024 to the end of July 2024, resulting in mixed outcomes. Initial guidance from the Home Office indicated that emails would be sent to the email addresses that visa holders used to apply for their visa. As of early August, the Home Office has stated that this is no longer the case and people should sign up for their eVisa now, whether or not they have been invited. The information to connect an eVisa to a UKVI profile (and to create a UKVI profile if necessary) can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/get-access-evisa.

Although confirmations regarding eVisas connecting to profiles are typically sent within a few days, many people have had trouble ensuring that both their passport information and eVisa are connected to their accounts. This is important because new guidance was released for MPs on 18 Sept 2024, which states that if a passport is not connected to the UKVI account, affected people returning to the UK after 31 December 2024 may not be permitted to board their plane or be permitted entrance into the UK, even if they have the legal right to do so. This could be disastrous to the education of international students across the University and beyond. The system has been reported by the Guardian and to the MPs at Parliament as "glitching". Wait times of up to eight weeks between sign-up for the eVisa and connection of the profile, passport, and eVisa are being reported.

While these issues affect millions of people across the UK, there are specific situations that directly affect international students. Key concerns include:

1. Family Obligations: Many international students at all levels have significant responsibilities in their home countries. These may include caring for spouses, children, parents, or grandparents. The delays and uncertainties in proving their right to return to the UK force them to make an untenable choice between fulfilling their family obligations and completing their degrees.

2. International Research Requirements: Many PhD programs expect students to conduct research or attend conferences outside the UK. This international exposure is crucial for their academic development and the global competitiveness of UK universities.

3. Risk to Academic Programs and Careers: Without proper documentation proving their right to return to the UK, they face the very real possibility of being unable to re-enter the country. This would force an abrupt and premature end to their programs, resulting in significant personal, academic, and financial losses.

4. Impact on UK Research and Innovation: The uncertainty surrounding the eVisa system may deter talented international students from choosing the UK for their educational studies. This could negatively impact the UK’s standing as a global leader in research and innovation.

The idea is to have a letter-writing campaign across campus, to encourage and assist people in sending letters to their MPs either via email or through the post. We would respectfully request that the deadline for the eVisa turnover be extended into 2025, and that those with the relevant documentation (ex. Biometric Residency Permits (BRP) / Biometric Residency Cards (BRC), etc.) be extended at least 6 months into 2025. This will give the Home Office time to rectify any glitches, systems issues, or backlog while allowing international students to prove their rights to enter, stay, live, work, and study until the eVisa system is fully operational and reliable.

Selling app for students (Expired)

Idea Description:

I would like to propose a university student led app that allows students to exchange items such as appliances, books and clothes for money or other items. That way this encourages recycling and allows students to make some money during their studies.

Sales can take place on campus (safety in a public space). We could even introduce a university version of the app olio that also includes giving away food for free or for an exchange of goods.

No lectures of university work after 5pm or before 9am (Expired)

Idea Description:

It is frustrating to have a workshop till 6pm. it affects transport as most buses stop running at 6pm such as the hospital hopper and others. it affects being able to attend societies and its leads to issues for students who will skip lessons or leave early and affect their academic performance. Additionally, sessions more than 2 hours long should have breaks to improve academic performance and prevent burnout, rather than a teacher saying take a break whenever and the student missing teaching time as a result.

Offer semester abroad opportunities to students (Expired)

Idea Description:

Whilst the university offers year abroad placements and summer abroad opportunities, they do not offer any semester-long opportunities abroad. A lot of students would apply for the opportunity to study abroad if they did not have to commit to an entire year abroad. This is a perfect middle-ground option for students who find year-long programmes too lengthy or summer programs too short/not having availability during summer. This choice would allow more students to have study abroad experiences, fitting diverse student needs and making study abroad a lot more accessible.

No more weekend exams (Expired)

Idea Description:

Students across a variety of courses are expected to attend in-person and online exams on Saturday’s. This is a campaign to stop weekend exams and keep them to weekdays only.

Here are some reasons as to why I think that there are grounds as to why exams on weekends should be stopped and kept to weekdays:

- If anything goes wrong with a student’s exam for whatever reason, and they need emotional support, there is no one on campus to support them due to no Student Union or University Support staff being on hand as it is a weekend. it isn’t fair that support cannot be offered to every student due to timetabling.

- If this is an online exam taking place on the weekend, there is no IT support available to students as the IT helpdesk is only open Monday-Friday. Also, if technical difficulties occur during an exam, there is no support students can access which could add to their distress and subsequent effect on their grade.

- As it is a weekend, mitigating circumstances will not be approved on the weekend due to it not being a working day. If a student cannot access the appropriate support on the weekend, why should they be expected to undertake the exam?

- Weekend exams go against a number of religious beliefs. For example, the day of Sabbath for Jews is a Saturday, which would go against religious practices if weekend exams were required from students. This is the same for Christian student’s if exams were held on Sundays, as this is also their day of Sabbath. Also, Ramadan celebrations sometimes occur on the weekends, and it is unfair to expect students to have to miss those for exams that should and could be kept to weekdays.

- A number of students live in Oadby and rely on the shuttle buses to travel to campus. However, the shuttle buses only run on weekdays, so these students do not have access to their transport service for weekend exams. Due to the cost of living and Oadby being the cheapest accommodation, it may not be feasible for students to fund another mode of transportation to campus.

- Most students have their work commitments on the weekends so that they can engage with their University courses during the week. Again, having weekend exams will affect their working schedule which could be detrimental to their weekly budget, especially due to the cost of living. It is also not as simple as telling your workplace that you cannot attend, so there may be unnecessary conflict for the student, which could be resolved by holding exams just on weekdays.

- Second to work commitments, people with caring responsibilities and also students with children may not have childcare for the weekend, meaning that they are at a disadvantage when undertaking the weekend exam.

- Lectures don’t happen during the weekend, and if this isn’t expected of staff, why should it be different for students? Everyone needs time to have a break.

- It is also an inequality of service for only some courses to have weekend exams. This disadvantages those students, so again it needs banning university wide and keeping exam times to weekdays.

Therefore, it is highly unfair for some students to be expected to take exams on the weekend, especially if they are in person due to these reasons.

Getting rid of asbestos across university campus (Expired)

Idea Description:

Asbestos is one of the most dangerous building materials ever used by mankind, making it illegal to make or use for the past few decades upon the shocking revelation of its negative impacts on the human's body breathing mechanism. It was the best-selling heat and chemical-resistant, fireproof and strong insulator for many buildings, back between its popularity in the 1960s and 1980s. However many buildings today still contain this toxic material.

Individuals who were exposed to this material for a consistent period of time, often workers on construction sites or in mines, have eventually led to their death, for example, from cancer. However, small exposure to this material does not significantly affect the human mechanism but may be harmful. Also, this material has been shown to be present in individuals living near an asbestos site or individuals who had exposure to the material through open contact in an office or at home.

Currently, the university still has a few older buildings containing this toxic material, such as the Engineering building's bathroom, which even has a sign warning label stuck on the wall. To the best of my knowledge, a part of the material in that room has been chipped off.

The aim is to strongly encourage the university to try to push these materials out of its building, where hundreds and thousands of students, staff and visitors enter and exit those buildings with asbestos, often not known or acknowledged that parts of the building contain possible dangerous toxic material.

It is important to mention that when the material is not damaged in any way, it will not significantly impact the human mechanism, and the university should have regular checks to confirm those requirements are met. Moreover, it is also important to note that the removal of this toxic material is a very costly and complicated matter due to its hazardous concerns.

However, the university should be financially able to get rid of this material slowly, but maturely, to ensure that minimal risk is obtained throughout living in the twenty-first century at the university.

A very long but interesting Facebook video explains the topic of Asbestos pretty well: https://www.facebook.com/asbestosclaimslaw/videos/a-really-fascinating-new-documentary-from-artetv-asbestos-the-never-ending-story/467435518771325/

I have written the information above to the best of my knowledge, meaning some information might be shown to be incorrect (out of my knowledge).

Add sanitary bins to all university toilets (Expired)

Idea Description:

According to the BBC 'About 6% of men in the UK are believed to have some kind of incontinence'. 262,000 people, in the UK, also disclosed in the most recent Census that their gender identity was not the same as their sex at birth. Currently, there are no standardised provisions for sanitary bins in male toilets, at the University. This leads to both trans and cis men who require these facilities feeling shame and embarrassment as they are unable to use the bathroom facilities of their gender. While there have been improvements to the University's approach to this problem, with some gender-neutral toilets being added to key buildings, these do not exist in all academic buildings and forces men to seek out a limited number of these toilets, rather than simply adding the necessary facilities to the bathrooms that already exist.

This proposal is that sanitary bins should be added to men's bathrooms in university buildings, allowing men who require these facilities to be able to do so without shame, embarrassment, or additional inconvenience due to their disability or gender identity.

Plus, it allows us to network and collaborate with students from other institutions, fostering relationships and exchanging ideas. By organizing this event, we showcase our university's commitment to providing a holistic education and gain recognition and prestige. It's also a chance to engage our campus community, raise awareness about global issues, and promote cultural exchange. Furthermore, hosting an MUN conference lets us demonstrate leadership and organizational skills while creating fundraising and sponsorship opportunities. Bridging the Gap; Advancing tuition fee parity for international students (Expired)

Idea Description:

As an international student, you may have noticed a significant increase in living costs in UK over the past few months. This situation can pose considerable challenges for international students, making it difficult to manage finances while pursuing studies. To think further, if any unforeseen circumstances were to arise, how would you continue your studies and sustain your life in the UK?

It is worth noting that while some of you may not face immediate financial troubles, there remains an evident gap in tuition fees between international students and local UK students. Local students benefit from government funding, paying an average of £6,000 per year. In contrast, self-funded international students shoulder an average burden of £15,000 per year, signifying a significant disparity that restricts access to education for many. This disparity not only affects international students' financial well-being but also undermines the principles of equality and fairness in education.

As an institution committed to diversity and equality, the university must take a proactive approach to re-evaluating its fee structures. Embracing inclusivity means recognising the financial challenges faced by international students and striving to reduce the disparity in tuition fees.

By addressing this issue and working towards fee parity, the university can demonstrate its commitment to providing an equal opportunity for all students to pursue their educational goals, regardless of their origins or financial circumstances. It is time to rally for change, advocate for fairer tuition fee structures, and create an inclusive and supportive environment that enables international students to thrive and succeed in their educational journey.

Parking for students on campus/accomodation (Expired)

Idea Description:

Parking for students on campus should be free. I am a commuter student to the University of Leicester, and my options are:

1) Victoria Park Car Park: £1 for 2 hours, up to £6 for 12 hours, and spaces are reduced due to the covid testing site

2) Pay and Display Street Parking: cheapest is £1 for 3 hours, £3 for 12 hours(I think its £3, it may be £4)

3) Free Street Parking: in areas close to the Uni, minimum 10 minutes walk.

4) Public Transport: £2-4 at least for return tickets, which are commonly a 10 minute walk to campus.

All of the above are public car parking spaces, anyone can park there, which means none of these are guaranteed, as people who work in the area park there. Maybe I am just lazy, but I believe all work places, educational and healthcare establishments should have free parking for their users. (interestingly, as I am a medical student, the placement out of Leicester that I was at provided free parking for us, close to the accommodation, whereas those in Leicester do not, I have the same 'issue' with their parking as well)

On that note, if you work at the University, I think they provide parking. There is a de Montfort Hall Car Park, which is usually free during Uni hours, as the events/shows are usually in the evenings.

For these shows, I have also seen cars parked along the pedestrian walkway in Victoria Park opposite the Hall, between the gate that is normally closed, and the Monument. I would be interested to know on what other students think. (I know it is all about money/economics, but it just doesn't feel right to me)

Extend Library Hours (Expired)

Idea Description:

Due to Covid, the current library opening hours are 10am-4pm weekdays and 12-5pm weekends. Now that lockdown restrictions are loosening and exam season is approaching it seems sensible to extend these opening hours, perhaps to 8am-8pm as they were before lockdown. I know a lot of students find the current opening hours quite restrictive, particularly to those who don't have their own devices or those who need to continue University work past 4/5pm and their home wifi isn't good enough to facilitate this. I think this is something that is really important to students and will really help everyone in their studies.

Students are more distracted at their accommodation than in the library. It genuinely helps to concentrate and get more work done when in the Library It will be helpful to keep the library open a bit longer for students to be able to have more time to finish their study tasks. Lots of students have to leave the library quicker now due to the shortened time which disrupts their study flow.

To scrap the Quorum for student union referendums (Rejected)

Idea Description:

The Quorum recently failed to be passed at the last Student Council however I believe it deserves another chance to become Union policy as 1) voters did not have enough time to consider the motion, or even knew what the quorum was. Which was shown by the fact at the student council meeting that most of the questions asked were what the Quorum is and the high amount of voting abstentions. 2) Because the last Student Council meeting was held during reading week, most of the people who planned to be there to speak against the quorum were not there because they went home, therefore the case for getting rid of Quorum was not properly heard when it was voted on. I believe on this basis, another vote should be held on scrapping the Quorum for Student's Union referendums. For those Student's who've never heard of the Quorum, the Quorum is attached to all Student's Union referendums and ensures that they are required to get at least 1000 votes to pass, which is overall, harmful to democracy. Quorum's usually result in lower voter turnouts because if a yes result is expected, no campaigners often don't vote or campaign because if they want to declare a referendum result invalid the best thing they can do is not vote for so a referendum doesn't reach the quorum and fails, which is effectively a win for no campaigners. Instead of a referendum being fought on the strength of ideas and which side can best mobilise the vote, instead with quorum's in place the no campaign will be able to win by not voting or campaigning at all. I believe that by getting rid of the Student's Union Quorum we would see more campaigning/voting from no campaigners and increase voter turnout overall as a result of referendums gaining greater publicity from no campaigners. With a higher, voter turnout, Student Union referendums will also have an increased legitimacy as the current turnout is already very low with the last referendum only getting around 6%. This is why the Quorum needs to be scrapped as it only serves to impede higher voter turnout and more competitive campaigning.
