The Peer Mentoring Scheme & Welcome Buddy Scheme are our programmes that offer peer-to-peer support for new incoming students during their transition to university. 

The aim of our schemes is to create a welcoming environment at the University of Leicester and foster supportive relationships between new and current students. 

Current University of Leicester students volunteer to become mentors and support new students through helpful advice and guidance, answering questions and supporting Peer Mentoring events. Our mentors often have a unique perspective of the demands of university life, what it is like to live in Leicester and the support services available at the University of Leicester. Mentors receive training and ongoing support from the Peer Mentoring Team throughout the scheme. 

New Students (Mentees): 

The Peer Mentoring Scheme is open to new undergraduate and foundation year students. This scheme is only available in September.  

The Welcome Buddy Scheme is open to new postgraduate students (PGT and PGR). This scheme is available in September, January, and April.  

Each cycle runs for 3-4 months to provide transitional support and help you are make the most of your university experience. 

All the schemes are hosted on our mentoring platform, Vygo. You must use your University of Leicester email address to be able to join.  

Based on your onboarding questions, Vygo will match you to your Peer Mentor, and you'll be able to communicate with each other through the platform. 

Your mentor will share information about the University, living in Leicester and study tips, but we encourage mentees to ask their mentors questions too! After all, they were new students not long ago! 

Current Students (Mentors): 

The Peer Mentoring Team is always looking for current students to sign-up and support the next cohort of students. 

The minimum commitment is approximately 12 hours across a 4-month period.  

You will be expected to complete a training module which will outline the overview of the role, mentor expectations, safeguarding, available services, and how to create a Vygo profile. We unfortunately cannot accept any student as a Peer Mentor unless they complete this training. 

As a Peer Mentor, you'll:

• Send check-in messages to your mentees. 

• Network with mentors and mentees 

• Complete training 

• Help promote SU events 

• Get involved across the wider SU community
