What is the ideas system?

The Ideas System is the easiest way to share your suggestions and vote on ideas from other students. When you submit an idea, the Student Voice Team and an Executive Officer will review it. We only decline ideas if they:

  • Break the law
  • Prevent us from meeting our charitable obligations
  • Name or identify individuals (including staff)
  • Contain defamatory or harmful content

If there’s an issue, we’ll contact you, explain why, and help you adjust the idea. You’ll also be told how to appeal.

Once approved, your idea is published for 10 working days, where students can give it a thumbs up, thumbs down, or comment.

What happens next?

  • If your idea gets under 50 likes:
Sent to the relevant Council to discuss. If they support it, they’ll start planning or developing policy.

  • 50–99 likes:
Must be discussed by a Council. They may choose to act by creating a plan or policy for Leicester100.

  • 100+ likes:
You can present your idea to Leicester100 (if you have a full policy). If not, a Council will create a policy or action plan with you.

You’ll be invited to any Council meeting where your idea is discussed, and you can be as involved as you like. If the idea becomes a policy proposal, the Council will help you build it—along with a handy guide.

Voting is simple

Just hit thumbs up or thumbs down on any idea. You can also comment and join the discussion.

Lower food prices and extend food outlet opening times on campus

    Passed

Considering that the University of Leicester is a university, the food situation on campus is incredibly anti-student.

Firstly, food prices are out of control; food on campus is far more expensive than it should be. Ideally, campus food should be as cheap as what is commercially available outside and comparable to prices at other universities. However, at this university, food on campus is often far more expensive than many alternatives outside.

Secondly, apart from Freemans, food outlets on campus close incredibly early and often before lectures are finished, which is inconvenient for so many students. Food on campus should be open as late as possible to give students, especially those who are in late lecturers or a part of sports groups or societies, greater convenience.

Issues like food prices or food outlet opening times are ultimately decided upon by the Leicester Student Partnership. Which is why this motion calls for the Student Union to make the case to the Leicester Students Partnership regarding these two issues. Firstly, ask the partnership to lower food prices, at least to what is commercially available outside of campus and is comparable to other universities. Secondly, to extend campus food outlet opening times at least until 7pm when all lecturers on campus have finished.

Thanks for reading, and please consider voting for this motion.
