My name is Nate Searson (he/him) and I’m running for Trans Officer. I’m the current President of the LGBT+ society and I was Secretary last year! As a result, I’m very involved in the LGBT+ movement on campus and hopefully have got to meet most of you in person at some point! I’m running for Trans Officer as I feel I have the relevant experience and view point. I’ve been here for a year and drawing on my own experiences, as well as those of my trans and non binary friends, I want to try and improve the trans+ experience here. The signposting needs to be cleared up – there’s so much advice to be found for us, but it’s spread out and far more difficult to find than it should be. It’s also really difficult to find non-cis specific information – like the locations of the gender neutral toilets on campus. I also want to work on the phrasing of certain documents, etc. Improvement can always be made on this topic and I know specifically some non binary students struggle with the phrasing that can be quite exclusionary. Finally, I want to work with the LGBT+ Society and the LGBT+ Officer to arrange trans+ specific events on campus, with a focus on educating people about our identities to break down some of the prejudiced views against us. As LGBT+ President I’m really easy to find and I like to think I’m approachable and trustworthy! I’m always involved with anything LGBT+ on campus and I hope to use that to make myself accessible to all, even for those who may not be out or who are questioning.
