Images are commonplace today. Ranging from photographs, smartphone videos, CCTV, dashcam video, bodycam video, social media, open source imagery, and satellite imagery to AI generated imagery, all images may potentially be tendered as evidence in domestic or international criminal prosecutions or civil proceedings. Authentication, reliability, and interpretation are key considerations when determining whether images are suitable for use as evidence. Learn about the benefits and challenges involved in image-based evidence and why lawyers and judges generally lack the visual literacy needed to properly assess images in a legal environment. This presentation is an essential primer for those students interested in learning about image-based evidence.
