Quidditch is a fast-paced, full-contact sport best described as a mix of co-ed rugby, handball and dodgeball, inspired by the sport in Harry Potter. It’s all played on the ground and is amazingly unique, not just for the game mechanics but also for its inclusivity for people on all areas of the gender spectrum. Fiercely competitive and incredibly entertaining, there’s something for everyone, so come along and give it a go!
QUIDDITCH IN THE UK
As a player of one of the fastest growing and innovative sports across the UK, you will have the chance to compete across the country against other university and community teams.
The UK Quidditch scene is host to many exciting opportunities to meet members from across the diverse and growing Quidditch Community. Mercenary Tournaments are a common event on the Quidditch Calendar, with members of the Leicester Quidditch Club attending and leading teams at tournaments such as Squirrel Cup, and Valentines Cup, as well as Leicester’s own tournament, Lightning Cup. The Quidditch Premier League has finished it’s fourth season, with members playing for regional teams such as the East Midlands Archers, West Midlands Revolution, and the Northern Watch.
OUR SOCIETY
Established in 2012, we pride ourselves on having played in the first official Quidditch match in the UK, Leicester Lovegoods (as we were then) against Keele Squirrels. Since then, we have participated in tournaments across the country, winning the Nightmarish Tournament in Nottingham, placing 17th in the country at the British Quidditch Cup 2019, and 5th at Northern Cup 2020. Also, we competed at the 2015 European Quidditch Cup where we took home first place of the second division – placing 17th in Europe.
But our society is about far more than just competitive sport. We have a GOLD accredited status with the Students Union and provide a variety of social events, including themed bar crawls, laser tag, and end of term Balls! We also frequently head out to schools, communities and organisations to run tailored sessions for people outside of the university, introducing them to the sport, and generally encouring fitness and wellbeing.
We are also one of the most inclusive societies for LGBT+, open to trans* and non-binary players, not just for socials, but as part of the world’s most gender-inclusive sport.
