As your Sports Officer, I want to make sure that the Students' Union showcases the amazing committment and dedication students have to our sporting community. To do this I've introduced the 'Sports Person of the Month' award.

Have someone in mind that you'd like to see as Sports Person of the Month?

We are looking for people that have shown outstanding commitment, dedication and always try their best and show others respect and sportsmanship at any opportunity. If the person in mind meets that criteria, head over to my Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/leicssports/) for more information on when the next submission period is!

The winner will be selected via a blind vote from Sports Council.

Winner

Name: Harrison Peel

Pronouns: he/him

Sport: Swimming and Waterpolo

Nominated by: Alice Bennett

Harrison has been one of the most dedicated players this term so far, stepping up to be our ‘in pool’ men’s water polo captain to lead the team. Going to every men’s polo game so far, he is one of the major strengths of the team, using his prior water polo skills to make exceptional passes that ultimately lead to goals within the game! He is a key player in making sure all the other men on the team are aware of the tactics, aims and rules of the game, especially taking the time to talk to and help freshers as well as members who have never played before in making sure they are all comfortable with the upcoming matches. In training, he welcomes anyone asking him questions about the sport, showing and demonstrating marking positions, goalie tips and in pool positioning. He always offers lifts to all water polo players to get to training, has picked up the balls from storage and taken them to training when our other captains have been busy. He is a true team player and a massive cheerleader, pushing everyone to play to their absolute best, and ultimately enjoy the sport! After joining SWOLO at the beginning of the year, he is now one of the major members of the team and has truly stepped up when needed.

Nominated by: Emma Ebbesen

Alex just has the bubbliest personality and I feel like she really brings that to cheer practice.
Recently she’s been doing 50-60 hour weeks on placement and then still continuing to come to cheer so she really deserves the recognition because she’s just so great!
If Alex can do it, anyone can!

Nominee

Name: Corrigan Goodwin

Pronouns: she/her

Sport: Law Netball Team

Nominated by: Amy Cullingworth

Corrigan has made a great addition to our team! After only learning Netball this academic year she has proved to be star! She has shown her skills with incredible interceptions, accurate passing and getting into space. Her positive attitude in training and matches has been so great to see. Corrigans hard working nature has meant she has made great progress and continues to grow and grow every week. We are very lucky to have her on our team!

Nominee

Name: Andreas Loumoulous

Pronouns: he/him

Sport: Law Society Football Club

Nominated by: Hamza Alam

Andreas has epitomised the high standards we strive to fulfil at the Law Society. He has never missed a training session and gives his all every time. He always listens to instructions and follows tactical guidance without issue. In games we plays at a high level and elevates our team. We won 5-0 against History this past weekend and we could not have done it without his defensive ardour. He also attends every social and even hosts when we ask him, without complaint. I, as captain, would not have been so successful without his constant support. Especially during such a turbulent month.

Nominee

Name: Izzy Butcher

Pronouns: she/her

Sport: Women’s Rugby

Nominated by: Soraya Holland

This is Izzy’s seventh year at the Club! Whilst balancing her last year of medicine, she has still managed to contribute heavily to the club this month. She drives back from placement to be a friendly face at training, encouraging the younger girls every week and has been available for all matches despite her schedule. On the leadership team she has provided valuable insight from her experience and even filled in at captain for games. Not only juggling her studies and her commitment for the club- she’s also been playing for the upcoming Leicester Tigers Women’s team, becoming part of history and inspiration to all the girls at the club.

Nominee

Name: Phoebe Madden

Pronouns: she/her

Sport: Cheer and Stunt

Nominated by: Oscar Dawson

Always there for her team mates, big support at training and away from it. Helps out on multiple other teams when they need an extra flyer. Always arrives early to help set up and stays to pack down.
Gives her all to make the team the best it can be. Kind and caring towards everyone.

Nominee

Name: Sonny Cartwright

Pronouns: he/him

Sport: Men’s Football

Nominated by: Ryan Bailey

Sonny is a hardworking technical player who has been pivotal to the 3's success so far this season. He always turns up on time to training and ready to work hard, this is reflected in his stats (3 goals and 3 assists in 4 games). Sonny has really got stuck in both on and off the pitch as a football fresher, with key game saving challenges being made and socially introducing himself across the club.

Nominee

Name: Adina Hattersley

Pronouns: she/her

Sport: Cheer and Stunt

Nominated by: Milly Abbott

Despite being new to the sport, she’s picked everything up so quickly and demonstrated amazing commitment. She actively goes out of her way to improve and is always so proactive at training. She always comes to training ready to learn and never complains, especially if a situation changes (like having to fly someone else/base with someone new).

She has not missed a training session and has made every effort to arrive on time and ready to work hard.

Adina has been a brilliant addition to the club and has faced all challenges head on. She has shown excellent sportsmanship in her behaviour and has actively worked to ensure all those around her are happy whilst at training.

Despite being a fresher she has formed friendships with older members and has offered them help and advise in and out of training.

I am so proud of Adina and she definitely deserves recognition!

Nominee

Name: Milly Abbott

Pronouns: she/her

Sport: Cheer and Stunt

Nominated by: Adina Hattersley

Milly is the flyer for my stunt group in cheer and she has made my experience so far (as a cheer fresher) so bright and fun! She loves what she does and it’s obvious in every session. Her sportsmanship is off the charts and she is always going out of her way to help the others on our team, giving advice and hugs every practice. It is a pleasure to have her on the team and I thoroughly look forward to seeing her bow and arrow in the future!

Nominee

Name: Charlie McCurrie

Pronouns: he/him

Sport: Rugby League

Nominated by: Jack McDonald

Charlie is an outstanding player in all respects. This month he has won the Warrington Amateur Rugby League Man of Steel Award in open age rugby, has been selected for the regional team after going through the Midlands Regional trials and has been a real MVP for the university team this year, with the highest number of tries scored this season, helping us to win all of our games so far!

Winner

Name: Douglas McDonald

Pronouns: he/him

Sport: Swimming and Waterpolo

Nominated by: Alice Bennett

Doug came into Swimming and Water Polo having never played before. As a strong swimmer, he chose to start something completely new with no experience, purely because he had watched it at the Olympics. With only one taster training session under his belt, he volunteered to play in the Men’s first Water Polo match of the season at BUCS when we were short on players. Not only did he volunteer to fill a much needed space, he also played in goal for all four quarters. Blocking many goals, he lifted the atmosphere of the team, remaining positive the entire time. Without his hard work, determination, and willingness to step up in times of need, UoL would not have been able to play against Oxford Brooks, or importantly score those 10 goals!

Nominee

Name: Katie Irish

Pronouns: she/her

Sport: Cheer and Stunt

Nominated by: Casey Manning

As Well-being and inclusion officer, she has constantly been available to the club in every matter which way. She has been a catalyst in ensuring that our freshers feel safe during socials and other situations by providing a safe space and person to talk to as well as giving out free bottle tops to avoid spiking. She has consistently battled through a variety of her own issues to provide wellbeing Wednesday posts to the club that have been informative, inclusive and helpful to our members and other followers. Over all, a lovely girl and I cannot fault her attitude and commitment to the club.
