Parasports Week Campaign 24-29 February 2020
This year we launched a Parasports Week campaign, which wasled by Mia, our Sports Officer, and Hannah Belcher and Abi Bowran from Sports Council. The aim of this campaign was to raise awareness of Parasports and educate our students about these sports.
The events were designed to help break down barriers students may face in sport and also inform students about how they could make their sports clubs accessible for everyone. Events held as part of the campaign included:-
Wheelchair Rugby Quad Nations - Get your tickets!
The 2020 King Power Quad Nations will feature European Champions Great Britain against two of the World’s leading teams, Australia and the USA. Our very own sports Scholar Nick Cummins has been selected and competed from 21– 23 February.
Film Night Social - Talk from Jesse Dufton and screening of 'Climbing Blind'
The University Of Leicester Mountaineering Club (ULMC) hosted a 'Film Night social' where they welcomed Jesse Dufton, a member of the GB ParaClimbing Team, who gave a talk about his experience. There was also a screening of his new film about his climbing adventures called "Climbing Blind".
Parasports Pub Quiz – Testing everyones knowledge on the history of the Paralympic Games and debunk myths surrounding Parasports
Sports sessions across campus - Goalball, Boccia, Kurling and Sitting Volleyball
Sports Inclusivity Workshop – Led by Sam Turner CEO of Cerebral Palsy Football
An informative session that gave practical information about how to make sports club more inclusive and cater for a range of disabilities.
Guest Speaker Event - Sam Ruddock, GB Paralympic Track & Field Athlete
Sam Ruddock gave a talk, sharing his experience of being a para-athlete. He made his international debut at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. He is now a Sporting Ambassador for Cerebral Palsy Sport where he can promote the work they do to provide sporting opportunities for those affected by cerebral palsy. Sam will be discussing topics surrounding:
- Diversity and inclusion
- Overcoming adversity
- Drive for success
