Why Isn’t My Lecturer Black?
Mon 21 October 2019 18:00-20:00
Ken Edwards Lecture Theatre 3
The underrepresentation of black academics continues to be an issue with only 1.9% of black academics working within the higher education sector (Advance HE 2019). The panel debate will include both black academics and students discussing their experiences of higher education.
This will include: how they got to where they got to, why they chose academia, what it’s like to navigate in an inherently white space, what they hope to achieve, what advice they would give to those who come after them and what practical steps universities can take to decolonise and tackle the attainment gap. This will be hosted by Naomi Eyeoyibo, BAME Officer.
Panel participants: Debra Gabriel (British Black Academics), Paul Campbell (UoL), Pelumi Obasaju (PhD Student), Fope Olaleye (NUS Black Students’ Officer).
