The University of Leicester Boat Club (ULBC) is a competitive rowing club for athletes of all abilities. Regardless of whether you are new to the sport, an existing athlete, or hoping to improve your fitness in a dynamic, social environment; everyone is welcome. National races, training camps, tours and weekends away... there's no shortage of sporting activities to take part in. Regular weekly socials are just the tip of the iceberg for what our sporting family gets up to when we're not getting our sweat on. Joining Boat Club can be a life-changing experience, it all starts by just giving it a row!
~ Squads ~
We are one of the largest mixed societies at the university, and every year we welcome both experienced and novice rowers to join our fun and friendly club. Below are the three main ways you can get involved with our huge mix of activities...
Novice members
Our novice squad caters for athletes who have never tried rowing before. No matter your fitness or ability, we will guide you through all the basics of rowing so that you can go on to race as competitive novices within just a few months. This also takes place in the cheapest and (we think) the highest value 'Learn to Row' course in the country! The novice crews quickly become a huge part of the club, when you join you'll meet and socialise with people from all years and courses, and it won't be long before you are a member of our big sporting family!
Senior members
We also have a squad for experienced rowers looking to race competitively or who want to improve and transition into the existing senior squad. With any squad you will massively improve your technique on the water and see huge gains in fitness. Our Senior squad has international quality boats, and in recent years have had access to quality Concept2 blades, ergs, and newly bought AveRowing boats. With dynamic training schedules set by our hard-working squad captains, accompanied by our dedicated fitness captain, both squads have a history of consistently performing at a high level, and we are always excited to see what a new year will bring with new members. If you are coming to university with previous rowing experience, drop an email to our senior captain (below) or message our Instagram page!
Casual members
So that to cater for everyone, we also offer a dynamic membership for more casual members who may only want to stay involved with our land training. This means you'll still get to join our weekly circuits, have access to erg slots and generally stay involved with the other squads without the access to training on the water in crews.
Coxing
Finally, if you're interested in learning to cox, or have experience in coxing crews we'd love to hear from you also! Coxing a crew is an incredibly rewarding challenge that will set you up as a vital member of our club. This could be ideal if you're interested in joining the sport, enjoying the social benefits or just generally want to be immersed in the club but don't feel attracted to the rowing itself! You can even balance coxing and rowing if you wanted to have the full cake and eat it!
For any inquires, you can reach our Cox Captain at nac25@student.le.ac.uk
~ Social ~
Rowing isn’t just about competing though; we have a thriving social scene - so big that we have 2 social secretaries dedicated to making sure every event we have is amazing. Our weekly socials are the best of any sports club (look out for the infamous Christmas Smurf Social) and we also get classy at the Annual Winter and Summer Balls. We get cheaper 02 tickets to sell on the night, so there's no reason not to join in on the fun! Not only this, but every Easter ULBC goes on tour to places such as Berlin, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Prague!
You’ll find us at fresher’s fair, and throughout the two weeks of freshers-fortnight we hold loads of events including the Fresher’s T-shirt Bar Crawl (over 120 people attended last year) and free rowing taster sessions. Experienced rowers can join our seniors for training on the first weekend of term, 1st/2nd October, and see how you like it. Like our Facebook page, and follow us on intsagram (@UOLBC) to stay updated!
Make the most of your university experience, meet lifelong friends, and have something to brag about when you visit home - join this iconic university sport!
