FAO University Of Leicester President/Activities Officer/Wellbeing Officer
I am a Primary PGCE Student at the University of Leicester and graduated from the School of Management in 2016 and worked in Management with BT before returning to study in 2018-19 to retrain as a Primary School Teacher. With the support of my Head Of Course Jenny Bosworth, across the 18-19 Primary PGCE cohort we are currently urging more of our cohort to become NHS Blood Donors and are hoping to successfully get at least 20-40 new donors out of our 80 course members to join the give blood team.
The NHS Blood Donor team is a charity that I have worked closely with for several years now and having personally donated 13 times already, whilst still a student at the University of Leicester, I wanted to explore the opportunities to set up a partnership between the University and Leicester Donor Centre because Each year the NHS Give Blood team need:
>Nearly 400 new donors a day to meet demand
>Around 135,000 new donors a year to replace those who can no longer donate
>40,000 more black donors to meet growing demand for better-matched blood
>30,000 new donors with priority blood types such as O negative every year
>More young people to start giving blood so we can make sure we have enough blood in the future.
I have met with the Branch Manager of the Leicester Donor centre and set up a 'Pint for a Pint' initiative within our School Of Education for Primary PGCE Students and essentially it means that for everyone on the 18-19 Primary PGCE Cohort who donates a pint of blood, I will buy them a pint (either a soft drink or lager/cider). We plan to all donate on our last week of our course (W/C 24/06) and generate some positive PR.
Following this event, we hope to work with the wider university to share the success story and consider how we can encourage more University students to become blood donors!
When I last spoke to the Manager and questioned whether we could arrange for a give blood van to visit the University on certain days of the year, I was advised this is not possible because we have the Leicester Donor Centre within 3 mile radius (LE1 5FQ). This is a brand new centre next to the Leicester cathedral and the team are all AMAZING!
My previous personal tutor and now lead for University Of Leicester Alumni Work Dr Matthew Higgins and mentor Jane Howie (Schools Operations Manager) advised me to get in touch because blood donation is an area that is frequently mentioned. It'd be great to arrange to meet with the appropriate teams to investigate how we can expand this initiative pan University.
I look forwards to hearing from you soon.
