Burlesque is all about Body Confidence, Self-Love and Sex Positivity
We aim to create a safe environment and encourage a sense of empowerment, confidence and general happiness. We welcome all shapes and sizes, genders and people with no experience or professionals. Nobody takes themselves too seriously and our main promise is that you will have lots of fun.
What is Burlesque?
Burlesque is a unique art of clothing removal – not ‘just stripping’ – a common misconception.
As a performing art it incorporates dance, acting, comedy and satire! Everyone has their unique style and we love it all: classical and neo burlesque, singers and dancers. We are a family of glitz, glam, sequins and sexiness.
Burlesque broadens the definition of beauty in a way that is inclusive of everyone. You'll find performers with varying body types, styles, tastes, personalities and personas. It's a creative outlet of expression whereby you can have complete control of your artistic style. We have performers that never remove any clothing and others who bare all!
What do we do?
We teach classes on confidence, dance, clothing removal, hair and makeup skills, costume making, choreography, performance, hosting skills, prop usage and we also host self-care and welfare sessions.
Extra special classes include balloon pop, belly dancing, feather fans, veil fans and isis wings and we are expanding our society equipment so that everyone can learn how to use them!
We put on several shows a year at the cocktail bar Firebug and all of the money raised from the shows go to local charities. We have previously supported Coppafeel, Jasmine House and National Ugly Mugs charity organisations, and the rest of the money raised subsidises the cost of society equipment, events and booking professional burlesque dancers to host specialised classes. We proudly won the 2020 Raise and Give Award and the Performance and Media Student Group of the Year Award!
Being a member does not mean that you have to perform at our shows! You can still get involved – there’s so much behind the scenes Vixen antics too, like our gorgeous Stage Maids, our Music Master and the Ticket Queen and Show Hosts, or you can just enjoy the shows with a tasty Firebug cocktail!
We try as well to incorporate, where we can, other styles of performing arts such as drag acts, cabaret, rockabilly, rock'n'roll, swing, all things vintage, popular culture and contemporary burlesque.
As a member of the Leicester Vixens you are entitled to discount prices on events, all of our classes as well as exclusive food and drinks deals at our sponsor bar Firebug. You will also be welcomed into the Vixens family, the most fabulous, sexiest and supportive group on campus.
What are we doing to be safe during Covid-19:
We are aware of the huge impact Covid-19 has had on everyone and are well-prepared to offer a safe and supportive enviroment to all of our new and returning members.
We will still hold our weekly classes, either in-person or online. Currently with the 'Rule-of-6' it is likely that classes will be held on line but we are in constant communication with the SU to bring you updates as soon as we can. Even when in-person classes are permitted we will still livestream the class so that you can choose the environment where you feel most safe and comfortable. There is no pressure to come to classes if you'd rather join in online!
We will also be running online socials and welfare events to make sure everyone stays connected and supported during the next academic year. These will include movie nights, quiz nights and self-care nights.
In terms of shows, we are hoping that we will still be able to run them on the planned dates and have made plans with our venue Firebug to ensure the space is safe and socially distanced for both the audience and performers. If this can't go ahead though we hope to livestream the shows in online Vixens extravaganzas!
Finally, all our props and equiptment will be washed before and after every use and stored in airtight boxes between classes to limit contamination. At classes we will provide disposable masks and gloves as well as hand sanitiser but we kindly ask our members to bring their own PPE to reduce waste and prevent contamination.
