WELCOME TO THE WOMEN IN LAW SOCIETY!
Welcome to the Women in Law Society, a vibrant and supportive community dedicated to empowering women in the legal field. Whether you’re a law student looking to build connections with a dream of making a difference or passionate about the intersection of law and gender equality, this is the community for you.
Joining our society opens the door to a wealth of exclusive benefits designed to enhance your legal education, increase your employability, and offer a genuine sense of community and belonging. We create a safe and inclusive space for women, by women—especially for those who may feel underrepresented or hesitant to engage in larger, mixed-gender events due to cultural, religious, or confidence reasons. Here, women are empowered to develop their careers with purpose, support, and understanding.
As a member, you will be eligible to attend and participate in:
Engaging Social Events & Volunteering Opportunities
We believe that success in law is about more than academics—it’s about feeling supported and connected. Our calendar includes wellbeing-focused socials like Galentine’s Brunch, International Women’s Day celebrations, movie nights, and housewarming events that help members build strong, lasting relationships in a friendly, relaxed setting.
We also prioritise giving back through volunteering opportunities. Our society connects members with local charities and community projects that align with our values, enabling you to make a tangible positive impact beyond campus. These experiences not only enrich your personal growth but also strengthen your legal perspective by engaging with real-world social justice issues.
Skill-Building Workshops and Career Dinners
Our workshops cover a broad range of essential topics tailored specifically for women pursuing legal careers. These include commercial awareness, networking masterclasses (addressing common fears around networking), practice assessment centres to prepare for recruitment processes, and advice sessions on obtaining vacation schemes, training contracts, mini-pupillages, and pupillages.
In addition, we host career dinners—intimate gatherings where you can meet and hear from successful women barristers and solicitors who share their personal journeys, challenges, and insights. These dinners foster a unique opportunity to ask questions and receive advice in a relaxed, supportive environment.
Competitions with Purpose
Our internal competitions are a key part of nurturing your legal skills and confidence. These include mooting, debating, speech, and essay competitions that focus on women’s issues and diversity—topics that often reflect real challenges faced by women in the legal profession.
These competitions are designed not just to improve advocacy and legal reasoning, but to create a safe and encouraging space for students to express themselves, build confidence, and develop public speaking and writing skills without the high pressure of formal settings. Many participants find these competitions a valuable stepping stone to more formal mooting and debating opportunities, enhancing both their CV and self-belief.
Our competitions are supported by tailored resources such as workshops, example materials, and feedback sessions from staff, students, and legal professionals, all aimed at helping you succeed.
Networking and Mentorship
Networking can be daunting, especially in a profession historically dominated by men. To combat this, we offer structured networking events, including our Annual Networking Evening where you can meet and connect with female leaders in law. We also collaborate with other student societies and professional organisations, broadening your network and support system.
Our One-on-One Mentoring Scheme pairs you with experienced barristers and solicitors who provide personalised advice and guidance to help you navigate your legal career path with confidence.
Practical Support: Formal Workwear Bursary Scheme
To ensure that no member is held back by financial barriers, our Formal Workwear Bursary Scheme offers support for professional attire needed for interviews, assessment centres, and formal events. This practical help means you can attend these crucial opportunities fully prepared and with confidence.
Why We Do What We Do
At the heart of the Women in Law Society is a commitment to closing the gap between talent and opportunity for women in law. By fostering a community that supports personal wellbeing, professional growth, and social responsibility, we aim to create future leaders who are confident, skilled, and ready to transform the legal profession into a more inclusive and representative space.
Your involvement in workshops, networking, volunteering, competitions, and mentoring will equip you with the skills, knowledge, and connections to succeed in the highly competitive legal field, while also contributing meaningfully to social justice and equality.
