The West Indies are a collection of mostly island nations, also known as the Caribbean. These nations are primarily located in and around the Caribbean Sea, spanning from the Gulf of Mexico down to the North coast of South America. The term 'West Indies' comes from the history of Christopher Columbus landing in the Caribbean, instead of in India as he had planned to, on his quest to get to the East by sailing West from Europe - thus the name West Indies. People from the Caribbean are referred to as West Indians or Caribbean people.
The West Indies Society is the University of Leicester's first society solely created to represent the Caribbean. We are small society who aims to bring together students from all over the West Indies, as well as those who are intersted in our culture and history. Our goal is to create representation for UoL students from the Caribbean and those with Caribbean heritage, and to foster a space where we can celebrate and share our culture. Our community welcomes any and everyone who is interested in, or would like to learn about the Caribbean, you don't have a West Indian!
